Community Matters…

13/12/2017

As a local business and employer, it’s inevitable that you will have a impact on your local community not only the people you employ but their family and friends too.  At Dawleys we are very much part of our local Ross on Wye community and are lucky to work in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Wye Valley with the beautiful River Wye.

In today’s competitive world of rising inflation and local spending cuts it can be a huge struggle for clubs and societies in the local community to attract sponsorship money.  Dawleys actively support a wide range of community schemes and charities and whilst we cannot support every cause we are delighted to have been able to support these groups in 2017

St Michael’s Hospice

Dawleys are an ambassador and ‘business buddy’ for St Michael’s Hospice, Hereford.  We have held many fundraising events for the Hospice including The Venus X 10k night walk around Hereford in September completed by our intrepid team of Teresal Yaldiz, Amie Wheeler, Emily Hughes, Michelle Cooper, Susan Yaldiz, Leigh-Ann Beard and Sarah Rose.

The 5k Paint Runner  completed by Luke Beard and his 5 year old daughter Keira in May.  When asking Keira if she enjoyed it she said “It was lots of fun at the start but the last bit was really hard” (aka the running bit..despite Luke giving her a piggy back for 2 of the miles!).  Luke also ran the St Michael’s Hospice Half Marathon in June & ventured out again in October running the 5km Running Scared event with colleagues Rob Cowles and Jen Collin.

Curry & Quiz Night – which our imaginatively named team “We don’t have a name..” (really guys?  That was the best you could come up with?) won!

In all we have raised over £1,900 for St Michael’s Hospice in charity events during the past 2 years.

24 Hour Spinathon for British Heart Foundation

In conjunction with the local gym WyeFit, Team Dawleys completed a 24 hour spinathon in April to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.  The spinathon was started off by Sarah Dovey at 6pm and Becky Flynn completed our final hour and a half finishing at 6pm on Saturday 8th April. In between Luke Beard, James Gill, Martin Jukes, Michelle Cooper and Leigh-Ann Beard took to the bikes.  A few sore bottoms, achy legs and a sleepless night later we successfully completed our 24 hour spin!!

Herefordshire Business Awards

The Herefordshire Business Awards 2017 celebrated the achievements of Herefordshire’s independent businesses large or small across the County.

The Awards are a celebration of talent and success rewarding Herefordshire’s high achievers, inspirational leaders and growing businesses.  There were 16 award categories covering various business sectors.  Dawleys were one of the main sponsors of the event.

And the winner is…..Sally Gibson announcing the winner of Eco Friendly business of the year

We sponsored the Eco-Friendly Business Award and were involved in judging the entries and presenting the award on the night.  The evening was hosted by Matt Teale, presenter of ITV News Central, Midlands.  Sally Gibson presented the award on behalf of Dawleys.  The winner of the Eco-Friendly Business of the year was Caplor Energy.

 Sports

We were also thrilled to support our very own Angela Sonn, who works in our Datacapture Team.  A keen athlete, as part of her preparation for the European Masters Athletics Championships Stadia (EMACS) Angela competed in the British Masters’ Championships at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham where she won Gold in the 200m sprint, Silver in the 100m & 400m and acheived Personal Bests in all three races.  You can’t get much better than that!

The 20th European Masters Athletics Championships Stadia was held in Aarhus, Denmark in the July 27 – August 6 2017 where Angela won a silver medal in the 4 x 400 women’s relay rounding off her  championships in fine style after successfully making it through to the Women’s 100m final earlier in the week.

Angela said ‘the whole experience was wonderful’ and is looking forward to more European challenges in 2018 along with her mascot Dawley Bear.
